From "News of Prato" in a December 2010 article we report the
one of the last survivors of the Red Bull Division who liberated the Nazi Valley
Before starting the city council on Monday, the mayor Paolo Cecconi Vernio wanted to dedicate a reminder to Don Sylvester Singlestad died Nov. 18 in the United States. Singlestad was a veteran American fighter in Italy in World War II, contributed to breaking the "Gothic Line" by participating in battles in the mountains of Vernio.
Born May 9, 1917, was a native of Minnesota and a veteran of the 34th Infantry Division "Red Bull" to which the City of Verne has also dedicated a street leading to the passage of Torricella where, in September 1944, he played one of the bloodiest battles that affected the its territory. Sergeant Singlestad was president of the association of veterans of the 34th Infantry Division "Red Bull" and welcomed the mayor of Vernio when it, along with local historian and past president of dell'Unuci Prato (official retired), Lieutenant Richard Barni, he went to Iowa in 2008 gathering of veterans of the 34th Infantry Division "Red Bull".
Singlestad was buried Monday, November 29, the same day that the City Council was held in Vernio, with a military ceremony at the military cemetery was at Camp Ripley, Minnesota. In September 2009 Singlestad intervened, especially coming from the U.S., the ceremony that annually organizes the City of Vernio Torricella to pitch to celebrate the anniversary of the liberation of Nazi-Fascism and Vernio the fallen of World War II. Along with him came from the United States some twenty veterans and their descendants to participate in the celebration of the Municipality of Prato. He arrived in Italy in Vernio flying directly from Iraq, where he had committed itself in active military operations, including the general commanding the 34th Infantry Division Richard Nash.
La commemorazione Sylvester Don Singlestad al consiglio comunale, dopo un breve ricordo fatto dal sindaco, รจ stata pronunciata dal tenente Riccardo Barni, Past President dell’Unuci di Prato, che proprio nel 2008 in occasione della visita compiuta negli Usa insieme al sindaco di Vernio, ebbe l’onore di essere nominato membro onorario della Associazione dei “Red Bull”.
